KB (also known as K Brilla) is the newest thing to hit Rhode Island hip hop, bringing his own distinctive style and flavor to the Sakonnet River region's thriving hip-hop scene. Although riased since 3rd grade in Rhode Island, KB was born in South Carolina, and having family throughout the south, was exposed and influenced by the music of that region.
"My southern roots definitely gave my music a different flavor", KB says, "especially my love for that screwed and chopped style, you can definitely see the way that influenced me, as a lot of my hooks are slowed down, chopped up, or both". KB even released a freestyle recently, titled simply "32 Fire", that was only available in the "screwed and Chopped" version. About the song, KB says "That song was made to be chopped up, when i spit it all i could think was 'damn, this is gonna be hot when i screw it up'. I think im the only cat in the northeast, at least in the River area, thats doin anything in that style".
Have people caught on to his distinctive southern/east coast hybrid? "Well, most of my stuff is still released in the normal format, but I got a few cats who ask for the Screwed shit by name, so thats cool. I mean, as long as people are bumpin my shit, I dont care whether its played fast or slow" he says. When asked how he listens to music, its "Screwed and chopped all the way. My boys get mad at me, 'cause they know when they are in my car, its all screwed and chopped, all day."
Aside from his mixtapes, freestyles, and other projects, KB is currently working on both an underground EP, and a full length LP, both due out this summer on the local imprint RockHard records. The EP will be titled "Black Market EP", with the lead single undetermined so far. As for the name of the LP, KB says "I really gotta wait to see where im at in a month or so, im hoping that Dub [Dub Naughty, KB's Label Mate at RockHard, and close friend, currently incarcerated], im hopin he's home in time to get on one or two tracks for the album, that will kinda influence the direction of both the album and its title".
Whatever it happens to be, KB is sure to be successfull in all his upcoming ventures.Have you performed in front of an audience?KB currently is in the studio working on a variety of projects, so does not have any shows in the immediate future. However, "if you catch me at a party or something, and i have a few in me [laughing], i might spit a little something", he says. Stay on the lookout for news of live events in the future, however.
