An original composition for cello solo.
I tend to view musical instruments almost as living beings, complete with their own voices and stories to tell. Their unique timbres stand out in my mind as representations of various moods to which I, as the writer of the language they sing, give voice. This work for solo cello is a good example of what I mean.
I conceived IN MEMORIAM upon learning of the death of a childhood friend. Mindy was her name. She was a sweet, sensitive, creative, and trusting girl who, through the most astounding misfortune, eventually found herself horribly abused by her husband. She then went on to suffer a slow miserable death from cancer. Mindy barely made forty years.
I realize that music like this is probably not going to win me any popularity contests. However, it is a natural expression of a psyche that needs to heal itself through the creative act. Listen as Mindy sings her mournful song through the cello and whispers in your earsWhy did I suffer so? I tried to be good.
