I wrote this song at the Kerrville Folk Festival with Brian and Rory in anticipation of my performance at Solidarity Day '91 - August 31st in Washington, DC. Health care seemed within our grasp back then, but was taken away from us by the insurance industry, big pharma, the hospital lobbies and "Harry and Louise." I'm ready to go Thelma and Louise if they get away with it again!
National Health Care Now - 1991
Anne Feeney, Brian QTN and Rory McLeod (BMI)
Danny was born 10 weeks too soon
Premature baby in the ICU
Could have saved a dollar if we'd spent a dime
What we did to Danny was a low-down crime
Something's gone wrong, won't you tell me why
The rich folks live and the poor folks die?
Living is a thing that money can buy
The rich folks live and the poor folks die!
When I started this job check-ups were free
Now there ain't no cure for what's wrong with me
My health care benefits gone away
With the lie that the company calls "co-pay."
Private insurance just makes no sense
Get a brand new liver at huge expense
But dentures, glasses, hearing aids
Are luxury items, friends, and don't get paid
When you're poor getting health care's too damn hard
Got the third world right here in our back yard
Listen up Mr. Jones and Mr. Dow
We want National Health Care Now!
We want National Health Care Now!
We want National Health Care Now!
We want National Health Care Now!
We want National Health Care Now!
