303Dreams (also known as 303D), is the brainchild of Toronto dj and producer Bill Cooke (Dj Billy Cox), and is one half of the infamous "Dj Iain Vs 303D" remix team, who have worked with such international artists and bands such as Madonna, New Order, Garbage, The Watchmen, Susan Aglukark, Sulk, Smoother, Boomtang Boys, Carole Pope and many others
Band/artist history
303 Dreams was born in Toronto, Canada in 1972. Growing up in the late 70's and the 80's, meant growing up with bands like New Order, Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk, Human league and other 'pioneers' of electronic dance music. It was their use of electronic's integrated with traditional instruments that caught his attention. At 16, still involved in several small bands, he began purchasing and incorporating synthesizers, samplers and other gear into the bands music. His first keyboard was the legendary korg M1 (which he still owns and cherishes). Around the age of 17, Bill also got interested in the world of the D.J. Growing up in Toronto, he had watched Toronto's nightclub and house music scene come of age with him. In the late 80's and Early 90's, Toronto's rave scene also began to explode, and it is during this time that the music really captured his heard. "I Remember in the late 80's, when the Detroit music was beginning to come up here, to the Toronto raves and clubs. People like Carl Cox were opening Torontos scene up to a whole new level with their music and DJ style. It was during this period that Bill decided to take is previously more of a hobby DJ career full tilt, and began playing at such landmarks of the time as the Nitrous and Exodus raves. "I was totally into the music, and then and there I knew that this is the type of stuff I want to make. He shortly thereafter left the two bands he was in, to pursue his early experiments in producing 'techno music'. Using landmark synthesizers such as his much beloved Roland tb303, Rolland 808 and the newly released Korg X3, he began recording some of his early material. Small, limited run pressing were released between 1992-1998, all though small runs, usually less than 100 copes of each, he had several white labels that did well, including a song called "303 Dreams, he released under his then DJ alias of DJ Bill Cox. 303 Dreams was a catchy electronic/acid house style track with un lashing screaming 303 Lines and heavy, almost industrial drums and percussion. It was this song that first caught the attention of now long time friend, and partner in production DJ Iain (One of Toronto's godfathers of the electronic and alternative scenes). DJ Iain did Sundays Night's at Limelight (one of Toronto's most famous and longest running night's at this world-known club). It was at limelight that Iain began playing "303 Dreams" as well as some of Bill's infamous white labels bootlegs he produced, and what they both saw was astounding. The response from the crowd was just incredible, like a ticking time bomb that just went off in a surge of energy when 303 Dreams was played. It was this 'rush' from the crowd that really convinced Bill that music truly was his true calling. "With the success of 303 Dreams, I decided then and there, that this was what I was meant to do. To create music that is different, makes people sit up and pay attention to it, but in a form that is still DJ and dance floor friendly. He decided to use the name of that now classic track "303 Dreams" for his pseudo ego for his music, and thus, officially in the summer of 1995 303 Dreams was born. Between 1995 and 1999 303 Dreams released a total of five singles, and one "Demo EP" entitled "The Demo Sessions Vol 1". A Compilation of his five previous releases, as well as new material. Iain and Bill also worked together from 1999 to present day on re mixes and co-productions for many local Canadian and international acts, under the guise of "DJ Iain Vs 303 Dreams". Working on material for artists such as New Order, Prodigy, Orgy, Garbage, The Watchmen, Smoother, Sulk, Joydrop and many more. Their unique blend of electronic music often fits perfectly for their production and re mix work on a lot of the alternative music of the time. In 2002, 303 Dreams released his first full length album, "Forever". The 12 Track indie released album was an instant success, and to date has sold over 8000 copies, world wide (not bad for an album financed out of his own pocket). The album also spawned four Singles, all released on Cd Single and/or Limited run 12" pressings. 2 Of those singles. Dreamscape and Scream also got some major air play on top 40 dance radio in Canada and in the UK. In 2003 303 Dreams released his new single "Dance in The Light, his first Vocal track. A Cross of hi energy dance and trance, the song was an instant classic. Signed to the now defunct Paratraxx Records UK, the single was quite a hit world wide, charting in the top 10 club music charts in Australia and japan. The song has also been featured on four internationally released compilations, including "Ruby Trance Volume 1" on Universal Music. "The key to these songs real popularity, explains bill "is that I finally found that magic formula every producer looks for . . . the right balance . . . the balance of a song being not to underground, but not commercial, vocals can make a song too commercial, but vocals used in an original or unique way can catapult a song into the spotlight. Thats exactly what happened with Dance in the Light. Sarah's vocals were that last little piece of the puzzle, they fit in perfectly, and took the song to a whole new level. The song is still going strong, and is being played by the likes of Judge Jules, DJ Casa Mia, and even Pete Tong has spun it occasionally on Radio 1! Currently 303 Dreams is working away producing two radio shows, the first being "The Smirnoff Radio Experience" for Smirnoff Canada, (which DJ Iain Happens to be one of the show's hosts/executive producers for). The second show "Revolution Radio" is 303 Dreams own show, aired on XTC Radio London, the show is a 2-hour journey into many forms of electronic music, and can be heard each Friday at 11pm eastern at www.xtcradio.com He is also still working away on his re mix and original productions, with a new album expected some time in the spring of 2005
