eRgo is a one man band from the Netherlands; Groningen.
The music made is called GERDUSTRIAL, a term made up by a friend.
Gerdustrial is best described as spooky, ambient and industrial soundscapes.
Just a few GBs and an old fast tracker program were the start of this one man project from Groningen, The Netherlands. The first outbursts of GerJan van de Kamp were created as early as 1999. The crappy, noisy sounds of those days were termed ‘Gerdustrial’ by a good friend.
Nowadays, the music is varying and the sound professional. ‘Gerdustrial’ can best be described as spooky, spherical, and danceable soundscapes. eRgo is said to create soundtracks to non-existing movies. The styles eRgo touches range from dark ambient to IBM, from drones to minimal electronics.
In the beginning a lot of samples were being used, as well as loads of fiddling with pots, pans, beerjugs, coins, cassottos, keyboards, guitars and the voices and screams of friends. This enthusiasm resulted in two demo’s: “F(R)ICTION” and “ALTER ERGO”. Reviewers stated ‘Ergo shows much talent to create nice soundscapes and spheres, creating a crossbreed between various styles of electronic music in the broadest thinkable sense ands knows how to keep the listener entertained very well.’
Early 2005 eRgo had his first live appearance: an intelligent and diverse show, ranging from ambient to industrial dance music, with extensive use of spoken word and visuals. A group of dancers gave an intense performance which fitted the music perfectly.
‘Gerdustrial’ is music for much more than just the dance floor: eRgo has written music for spoken word venues, short movies and in the last part of 2005, eRgo created the music for the dance performance “SchoonScheuren” and was included in the act as well. Over a period of several months, eRgo toured throughout the Netherlands with the dance group and performed live on stage.
Currently eRgo has divided the several styles he touches into two projects: when cooperating with others, he focuses on the more soundscape and ambient genres, while on his own and during live performances, he entertains the listener with his more danceable electronics. Much attention is paid to the mathematical rhythms and melodies, following his personal hero Aphex Twin. The live appearances are an overwhelming multimedia experience, with loads of visuals and other pleasures for the viewing audience. For eRgo’s creations are a lot more than just music
