Just another space-metal goth-punk electro-folk industrial gospel rock opera
Pray is S. DeGennaro. S. DeGennaro is Pray. Conceptually, it is heavily influenced by Pink Floyd's "The Wall", Marilyn Manson's "Antichrist Superstar", and Queen's early albums, with a fair degree of thematic continuity and little to no space between songs. Musically, it draws from a staggering variety of styles (see influences below).

Story behind the song
Quit is the oldest song on Pray. It was written in the winter of 1998 and changed very little over the next six years. Ironically, it was the *last* song to be included on the album. Originally written for an album called Gravity (as were three other songs on the album), which never got completed due to my 8-track reel-to-reel calling it quits (no pun intended) that summer, the first version of "Quit" I recorded was so uninspired that I didn't even consider putting on Pray initially. Then, one night last fall, I dusted off Quit for an open mic night at a coffee house because there was almost no one there and I hadn't played it in a long time. It got such a good response from the few people who *were* there that I decided to add it to Pray. Again, Mike played drums on this one, much to its betterment. Another incidental note, for those who have gotten this far: Quit, Prey, (and Noise #2) are the only two songs on the album that have indentifiable profanity. They are also, IMHO, the two best songs on the album, far and away, and not only do they contain profnaity (and thus are disqualified from any radio play), but the profanity on each of them is so integral to the song that I found it nearly impossible to mix non-explicit versions. Yet another example of me fucking myself in the foot before I even start. Ah.....
Lyrics
I need something to take the pain away To sweeten my mouth, remove this bitter taste I can see their faces set in blanks I refuse to join their hellish ranks Put my tie on Press my jacket I'm off to join the war And in the rat race there are prizes to be won For those who look and feel and act like everyone Sooner or later, though, it all just turns to shit So if it's all the same to you I'd rather quit I need something to spark these dying lights To fuel the fire--illuminate the night Nothing's working; the blaze has turned to ash The only thing that burns now is cold, hard cash So I shine my shoes up Put my suit on I'm off to join the war (Chorus) Cause quitting is easy It's waking up that's hard At six in the morning roll out of bed and into the car Each day is a new life Every evening is its own little death And then we wake up Do the whole damn thing again Sometimes I wonder Why I even bother drawing breath But I tuck my shirt in Cut my hair off Now I'm off to join the war And in the rat race there are prizes to be won For those who look and feel and act like everyone Sooner or later, though, we just don't give a shit So if it's all the same to you I'd rather quit
