Band/artist history
If Vacant Excuses' musical style had to be categorized perhaps one could say they're a modern progressive/alternative rock band. They have a kind of bluesy-folk sound at times and at others more of a grunge flavor. Their performances include a wide array of original songs with a few tasteful covers, among them a juiced up version of Neil Young's "Keep on Rocking in the Free World." A Vacant Excuses performance is energizing...they've never been accused of being background noise at a bar...audiences at their shows typically get up and key in on the jams.
The members of Vacant Excuses met and formed the group during the fall of 1999 while living in Salina, Kansas. Although originally a foursome, currently the three-member band consists of Pat Carey (guitar, bass, vocals), Mark Feuerborn (guitar, bass, vocals) and Robert Crable (drums and vocals). As time passed they grew and became a formidable entity, begging to devote more and more time to the music until it was apparent that they had something special.
The guys eventually gave up their other endeavors to pursue the band exclusively and in the early summer of 2001 Vacant Excuses moved to the Dallas/Ft Worth area. They'd heard about Deep Elem, (the area's alternative music scene) and thought it would be a good place to showcase their talent. It was while in Dallas that they released their first album "The Red Room." The CD and the band were well received on the scene and soon they were developing a following, which would see fans driving for hours to attend their shows. As time went by, Vacant Excuses began to realize the dominant sound coming out of Deep Elem wasn't exactly their style. Also, around then the band's original fourth member decided to leave the group. At that point the remaining three felt that Denver, Colorado offered a music culture more suitable to the type of group they'd become. As the lyrics of one of their songs suggest, they once again "traveled onward."
As a rather new act in the Denver area, Vacant Excuses is generating an enthusiastic audience through their performances. In addition to playing out, the band is working on their second album with a release date in the Fall 2003. Also, since coming to Denver they've picked up a management team, which includes their primary Business Manager, an Arts Director, a Music Production Coordinator and a PR Consultant.
Vacant Excuses and their fans are excited about the new album and prospects for the future. Coupled with their experience before and after the first album and their growth as musicians the group feels the new material will be well received. They're driving forward, getting exposure and every day increasing their following. Since their start in 1999, Vacant Excuses have developed and emerged as musicians and performers a caliber above many of today's most established acts...they look forward to playing for you soon.
