Story behind the song
The composition is in Spanish. An English translation follows:
Lyrics
Smoke and nothing the breath of being: Blossom, bird and man must die, Love in a sea of forgetfulness lie, To a brief gravestone pleasure fleeing. Of yesterday what light still radiates? Twilight every splendor steals; What liquor but its gall conceals? The evil of birth all expiates. Who has laughed who has known no pain? Joy is with sweet sorrow fraught, Feeling an ardor mad and vain! Vain and mad the care of thought! What is life? To dream without sleep. What is death? To sleep without dreams.
