"That Muddy Water"

halfway across the bridge
Alan drank the only courage he could find
he watched the muddy water flow
while standing at the crossroad in his mind
the empty bottle dropped
and it drifted some 'til it sank out of sight
and as tears fell from his eyes he cried
Lord I just can't go on with my life
Alan gasped for breath
as Brother David pulled him to dry land
and our little congregation understood
it was the Lord's almighty hand
that brought us to this river bank
to save this man along with all of us
we heard him asking Jesus
to forgive him for the bad things he had done
and that muddy water
swallowed him up whole
soaked right through his skin
clean down to his soul
all of his sinful deeds
were washed away the day
that the muddy water
carried him away
while the preacher baptized Helen,
Alan slept and dried out in the sun
when he awoke completely sober
Helen told him her new life had just begun
Alan turned toward the water
smiling at the preacher reaching out to him
this time with tears of love
he plunged into the river once again
repeat chorus (2x)
and the living water
carried him away
