Story behind the song
“Pena Duro is a fictional prison in Santa Prista, a small island in the northern Caribbean (in the DC universe), where Bane grew up. The more you know…”
-Daniel
“I don’t see what the point of the comic reference was, but it’s a song with a decent message so I won’t complain.”
-Max
Lyrics
Now I know that other track said, “Get like me.” Well that’s the only way, ‘cause they don’t make ‘em like me. And I hate to break it to you, but you can’t succeed. I bring the steeze, which is style brought with ease. But if you think my life’s a breeze, then you’ve never seen my knees. I make friends with my scars, ‘cause they’re part of who I be. They came from gettin’ skills, which I build upon my will. And if I can use them right, then they might just pay my bills. It’s just one of those things that makes us different than you. Let me break down the phrase, “Do what you gotta do.” You need to take into account that everything is circumstantial. Maybe what your life’s about isn’t financial. And if that’s the case you better stop & look at what you’re doin’. Make sure you got a handle on the way your life is movin’. If you make the wrong moves you could wind up in Pena Duro. Trading life away for a prison sentence called “settle”.
If D.S.S. is an acronym for the best, & M.Y.P. stands for great emcee you might want to subscribe to a different dictionary; somethin’ less outlandish & a little more ordinary. D.S.S. means don’t seek stress & M.Y.P. means make your press. I hope that you can handle this. I know a lot of people can’t stand for this. Now I see a lot fellas be fightin’ for the title, makin’ real big money tryin’ to be somebody’s idol. Well I hate to blow your bubble, but we got enough trouble without kids runnin’ crazy tryin’ to be the next Jay-Z. Maybe if we stop tellin’ them to “get like me” & let ‘em know they’re better off tryin’ to do their own thing. So get like you, get get like you. Get inside your head & see what you can do. My man makes a lot of sense when it comes to influence. Just tellin’ our story makes people wanna do it. But we gotta let ‘em know this ain’t the only way to do it. Kids start tryin’ to hustle, just to wind up truant. I ain’t sayin’ that we gotta start bein’ role models, but we gotta make it clear we’re not the only ones to follow. Get the smart kids out from the back of the class. Just say be the best you & let ‘em choose there path. So I hear that everyone says you’re the man, & you’ve led the type of life that’ll get you lots of fans. And they loved the first album all about your life’s story, but twenty albums deep it might start to get boring. And another thing, what’s the deal with all these dope boys. Let’s start a new clean thing, & I’ll call ‘em soap boys. And to wrap it all up, I’ma say this for you. Get like you, get get like you.
