Story behind the song
This movement has been rediscovered in 1966. It had been the 2nd movement in the first few performances of Symphony No1, but Mahler discarded it after 1896. Nowadays it is rarely performed, out of respect of Mahler's decision. Latest research shows, however, how the elements and phrases of this movement are frequently quoted in other movements of this symphony.
