Story behind the song
14. Scene Synopsis
Doctors Oreshenko, Gangart, and Ni, are sharing their conclusions, based on x-rays taken of Dontsova, which are on a table. They diagnose cancer of the esophagus, but are unable to conclude the extent of the disease – the symptoms of esophagus of the cancer can be elusive, and difficult to diagnose. Because of Dontsova’s constant exposure to radiation, resulting in chronic radiation sickness, Gangart doesn’t believe Dontsova will be able to survive the surgery. Dontsova is called in, and Oreshenko tells her that they have decided to send her to the Radiation Institute in Moscow, where she can receive better treatment.

14. The Other Side of the Coin
(Doctors Oreshenko, Dontsova, and Ni, are sharing their conclusions, based on x-rays which are on a table)
Vera
Cancer of the esophagus -- Its symptoms are usually subtle and inconsistent.
Ni
Fairly rare, and it is three to four times more common among men than among women.
Oreshenko
The upper GI tract series shows more clearly the cancer tumor of the esophagus.
Vera
The tumor is without distinct border, and we can see evidence of it perforating the wall of the esophagus.
Oreshenko
I do not believe that any of the x-rays rule out the possibility of mixed forms of the tumor.
Ni
The prognosis based on statistics, is not good.
Vera
Given her inability to replace her blood cells, I do not think she will even survive the surgery.
Oreshenko
Yes, her medical history is a matter of concern….(To nurse Olympiada)…Call the patient, please.
(Dontsova enters, dressed in a patient’s gown)
Well then, my respected colleague, the celebrities are divided in their opinion.
Dontsova
Which one of you is it who thinks the worst?
Oreshenko
Your ‘daughters’ are the ones who believe the worst. See how you’ve brought them up? I take a more cheerful view.
Dontsova
I see. Thank you. So now what.
Oreshenko
In Moscow, we have our friends Lenochka and Seryozha in the Radiology Institute. So what we’ve decided is this: we want you to go there.
