Story behind the song
Scene 16. Synopsis In the registrar’s office, Pavel is on the phone, telling his wife that he is being discharged immediately, and for her to come and pick him up in the car. He says he is well, and that he is only scheduled for monthly check-ups. He declares himself a new man, having perserved, and proven to be stronger than the circumstances. A ballerina comes onto the stage, dressed in a monkey costume, and dances.
Lyrics
16. Zoya’s Monkey (Pavel is in the registrar’s office, on the phone to his wife). Pavel Kapa! Come immediately after breakfast to fetch me with the car! My treatments are finished and have I have come through them easily. I am well! Very, very good! Only monthly checkups…It is quite clear now that they had merely been trying to frighen me with the disease. But I proved to be a man of courage, stronger than circumstances. I am a new man! (A solo dancer dressed in a monkey costume comes on stage, and dances a ballet).
