IF AT FIRST YOU DON'T SUCCEED
Song about getting married again, and the difference between first and subsequent marriages. PRO RECORDING
Soulful Beach Groove music following in the footsteps of Van Morrison, Eva Cassidy, Bill Withers, Jack Johnson, Elton John and Sting... with a French twist!
Story behind the song
I have played music at many weddings but was not aware of songs specifically about people entering into a second (or more) marriage. So, I decided to write one.
This story is about a couple who both have children from previous marriages and are moving into their older years.
Lyrics
This time, when I went over the paperwork and licenses
I didn’t know where to sign ‘til I put on my reading glasses
If I ever was more in love, I can’t remember
But then again, it might just be early-onset Alzheimer’s
I’ve been down this road before and tossed aside
But I couldn’t dream of a better companion for the end of my ride
If at first you don’t succeed
Try, try again
Sometimes the book is hard to read
But don’t put it down until the end
Because the author of our lives
Has quite a sense of humor
But I’m grateful that in the final pages
He has joined us together
Between your kids and mine we’re a regular Brady bunch
If they all go to college, there’ll be some serious numbers to crunch
I swore I’d never, never ever get married again
But here we are today gathered with family and friends
I thought my heart was hopelessly shattered
But you patiently helped me piece it back together
If at first you don’t succeed, etc…
This time around some of our loved ones are gone
And this time around some of the young ones have kids of their own
But I can feel everybody’s blessing from right here and from beyond
And I know that with you forever is where I belong
If at first you don’t succeed, etc…
If at first you don’t succeed
Try, try again
I finally have everything I need
You’re my lover and my best friend
Yes, the author of our lives
Sure has quite a sense of humor
But I’m grateful for his final pages
Oh, I thank God for, in the final pages
He has joined us together
