Story behind the song
I wrote the original version of this song as an exercise for a songwriting group. That exercise had some constraints on words that had to be used and there was a deadline.
I changed the idea behind the song a little, but stuck with the background story. On this version, things turn out a little better than in the version for the exercise.
Lyrics
verse 1:
Still going back to your past
To find the things you need.
Hoping that it all won't crash
Before you can succeed.
verse 2:
We're older now. You have no one.
But long ago had me.
Now it is the season
For fondness and grief.
chorus:
Stealing home. What you gonna get
From stealing home? It hasn't helped you yet.
Stealing home. It doesn't fill the emptiness.
verse 3:
I knew you when you had no food.
No one to help you grow.
That might explain the attitude
And why you've got nowhere to go.
verse 4:
Home was where you slept at night.
You wished it could be whole.
But things were never quite alright.
And that took its toll.
chorus
verse 5:
Remember all the work it took
To leave this life behind.
Memories are your scrapbook
And the memories are unkind.
verse 6:
Your choices only narrow
With each passing day.
Long ago we were almost close,
But you've always pushed away.
