Story behind the song
The Potomac Syndrome, Andre Akinyele's first album under that name, on the Bombay Recording Company label is a mixture of many musical genres. From alternative pop/rock tunes to urban /r&b grooves in the likes of Lenny Kravitz, Meshell Ndegeocello, Rahsaan Patterson, Janelle Monae, etc.; The Potomac Syndrome offers something for everyone. The Potomac Syndrome released January 9, 2012 is an eclectic album. Self-produced, The Potomac Syndrome features 13 tracks and is the latest addition to Andre’s assorted catalog. The album opens with the title track “The Potomac Syndrome,” a funk/rock inspired tune reminiscent of early Lenny Kravitz. However, tracks like “DC Love (You Know It),” “Help Me,” “Georgetown,” and “Love Me” ignites Andre’s passion for love. “Love Me” is a song indicative of early Prince and the Minneapolis Sound. In contrast, songs like “Run To,” “Nebula,” “Tip of My Tongue,” and “PaceMaker” show Andre experimenting with technology and various synths suggestive of the early 80s. Overall, The Potomac Syndrome is one of those albums where if it were an LP, any place the needle drops the music grabs you.
