Story behind the song
A tribute to a friend and fellow poet who got me to start going to open mics, first to share poetry, which led me to my current passion of writing lyrics and collaborating with an ever-expanding group of international musicians - all of whom I call my friends.
Lyrics
Crooked Man
(V1)
I had once known - a crooked man
And he was dealt - a crooked hand
He always walked - a crooked mile
But all the while, he grinned his crooked smile
(V2)
Oh how his words would move you so
Writing of places he would love to go
He loved to write - of the plight of men
Just with his pen, his ever-faithful friend
(Chorus)
Crooked man... crooked man
He was the best friend - you could ever have
Nature betrayed him - But he got by with what he had
With his crooked smile...
He'd walk the crooked mile.
V3
We met for coffee, on a Saturday
Solved all the world's problems... from a small cafe'
I still picture him in his favorite chair
I wish I'd known he'd never be back there...
Solo
(V4)
In this crooked world - there's no straight or true
No morals or conscience - to guide the few
But one crooked man, he stayed dignified
He spoke of the truth, until the day he died
(Chorus)
Crooked man... crooked man
He was the best friend - you could ever have
Nature betrayed him - But he got by with what he had
With his crooked smile...
He'd walk the crooked mile.
