Story behind the song
Matt wrote this song some years ago, mostly about Ollie North, but it seems to fit the contours of some other 'great' Americans and their somewhat clueless adoring fathers.
Lyrics
Oh my son, you're my hope Oh my son, you're my pride You're can-do, and you can do no wrong by me. In a driving NSC Still every night he says his prayers He's can-do, he's can-do, he's can-do, he's can-do And what he does he doesn't need to do a second time. Now I'm upstairs and I'm dressed in my country's pullover flag and I'm waving out the window And I am screaming my consent And I'm calling to my son I said, 'Son, what's that game?' He said, 'Dad, it's baseball.' I said, 'That's great, son. I love the baseball.' Now it's Thanksgiving on the bench And my son, he's been sent home He's come home I guess the pitching arm couldn't last Come put it on ice You'll be back in that game You'll be back in that game You're a hero So you made up your own rules, You're still a hero You're my hero. And I'm calling to my son I said, 'Son, what's that game?' He said, 'Dad, it's baseball.' I said, 'That's great, son. I love the baseball.' He said, 'Dad, it's baseball.' I said, 'That's great, son. No further questions.' Oh, my son, there'll come your time Oh my son, oh my pride You're can-do You've got a mandate from the people.
