Story behind the song
Complex Man
Father and son relationships can be extremely difficult. I am always trying to "nibble" around the edges for ideas that have not been "over used" for my songs. There have been very few songs written in this vein. Father and Son - Cat Stevens and Cats In The Cradle - Harry Chapin. Both powerful songs. Years have gone by and nothing else on this subject. In my life, I've had quite a few relationships with men who had strained relationship with their fathers. Tough, hard subject. Perfect for me. I see into souls. I feel their pain on both sides. Time to write a song - Complex Man.
Lyrics
Complex Man
Born in another time,
That barely still exists…
Eve of a fadin’ line in time,
Where survival meant the fittest.
Growin’ up – fearin’ him,
Trying not to annoy…
Half hating – half loving him…
Longing to be his fair-haired boy.
Just a kid – cast adrift…
No one knew him like I did…
The good and the ugly,
Everyone else’s buddy,
Did we end before we began…
Oh - what created - this complex man…
In time I found my voice,
Eased my angry heart…
But now it’s down to a tough choice,
Forgive or live worlds apart…
Just two hard-headed men,
And a last chance that won’t come again,
Shattered lives – emotional ties,
Finally seein’ through each other’s eyes…
Now his time on earth…
Is growin’ ever shorter,
It’s all so hard to put into words,
Oh Lord – change my chaos into order.
As time and I grow older,
There’s an old head on young shoulders,
It’s not easy to see,
I am he and he is me,
Havin’ faith in a greater plan,
Now understanding – a complex man…
