Lyrics
OLD WILLIE Old Willie sat there ‘neath the tree and watched the crowds go by, But with a closer look you’d see a tear there in his eye. It’s been awhile he thought and sighed and wondered at his lot. The soul within him stirred and cried has everyone forgot. But Old Willie he don’t cry anymore To a life of pain and tears he’s quietly closed the door He walks along and sings his song on a distant golden shore But Old Willie he don’t cry anymore The tree beneath which Willie sat was huge, it’s limbs now bare It’s leaves a multicolored mat that carpeted the square Twas bitter cold as he recalls that night so long ago, The night he found her, like a ball, all curled up in the snow. A little girl who’d lost her way and would’ve died no doubt, ‘Cept Willie found her where she lay and vowed to get her out. First he removed his coat of fur and wrapped her all around, Then thru the snow he carried her, ten miles back to the town. But Old Willie he don’t cry anymore To a life of pain and tears he’s quietly closed the door He walks along and sings his song on a distant golden shore But Old Willie he don’t cry anymore Aw Willie was a hero then, beloved by one and all. If ever you’ve a need my friend, you only have to call. But now he sits beneath this tree no legs below his knees. He lost them both that night you see, he never felt them freeze. The pencils now that Willie sells, they help to keep him fed. He listens to the Christmas bells and slowly nods his head. And as he sleeps now old and gray, a victory he has won, For in a Heaven far away, his Father says “Well done”. And old Willie, he don’t cry anymore. To a life of pain and tears he’s quietly closed the door. He walks along and sings his song on a distant, golden shore. And old Willie, he don’t cry anymore. old Willie, he don’t cry anymore.
