Story behind the song
I tend to write dark songs, but every now and then I write something happy, despite myself!
This song started from the acoustic guitar riff at the beginning of the song. Lyrics were hard to come by until i reached the chorus. At first I struggled there, trying to get "clever" with various chord progressions, until i realized that no chord change was needed: just hold the C and then return between lines to the original groove.
This song, musically, is one of the very simplest I've ever written. And yet I think it is one of the strongest compositions, with a great hook and pretty much everyone who has heard it has told me it is addictive.
The production is not super clean and professional, but there is a "home-made" aspect to this song that, to my ear, makes it even more accessible.
Lyrics
Lift your voice
By Quico Reed: © 2010
All Vocals & Instruments by Quico, except:
Drums by Justin Herdman, Bass by Gabe Steele
Verse 1
When all the leaves fall from the family tree
And leave a lonely voice with no harmony
Just life your voice & sing a joyful song
And someone soon will want to join along
Chorus:
Lift your voice with me and sing
Sing a song of sun in spring
Chase away the winter breeze
Think of sunlight on the trees
Verse 1 with response
When all the leaves fall from the family tree
(The snow of winter gives way to the spring)
And leave a lonely voice with no harmony
(And we will shed our grief and sing)
Just life your voice & sing a joyful song
(Sing as if nothing is ever wrong)
And someone soon will want to join along
(Tra-la-la ‘till all your sorrow’s gone)
Chorus repeat
Verse 2 with response
The flowers come with the buzzing of the bees
(Crickets chirp with happy rubbing knees)
And gentle waves lap at the sandy beach
(Puppies smile and scratch away their flees)
And joyful gulls float lightly on the wing
(They float and dive below the ocean gleam)
Celebrate the gifts that Nature Brings
(Lovers’ eyes grow misty as they dream)
Chorus
