Story behind the song
It's about my Oupa's(Grand Father's )farm in Southern Namibia (Old South West Africa)in the late 50's to 60's. It's a typical story of how fathers tell their sons and daughters what a hard life they had in comparison.Walking 12 miles from boarding school at weekend .Having to work on the farm instead of playing around. The farm's name was Blyderverwag ,farming mainly karakul sheep ,till the fur trade was hit by the "leather purists."Ironically they had a problem with fur coats ,but no problem with leather shoes.Springbok is a town in South Africa on the way to Namibia. If one wanted a simple direction then ;"vat die Springbokpad" is what would have been said.No fancy G.P.S. or intricate map required. Its a nostalgic journey about the old ways in which we grew-up in these parts generally. Not too unlike other parts similar semi-arid regions of the world ,I would imagine.
