Story behind the song
A desire line is what planners call a track made by peoples' feet, indicating the "natural" route that people want to take, irrespective of where teh actual path has been laid. I thought this was a very poetic phrase for a rather prosaic thing, but it takes on a bit more depth if you extend the idea across someone's whole lifetime... we leave our own traces behind despite teh "rules" and expectations of others.
Lyrics
The planners planned a patch of grass – a lawn unbroken green
But over time as innocents have crossed a line is seen
The stones were never laid but it has joined the space between
Desire lines
The tracks across the landscape where a million feet have led
For trade and food and riches; for the news that must be spread
The physical reflection of the thoughts in peoples’ heads
Desire lines
Desire lines. Connecting place and time.
Desire lines carve the patterns in your mind
As the river carves its valley and the verse demands its rhyme
Desire lines
Philosophers and scientists reflect on how we choose
The thoughts we have most often are most difficult to lose
And the free will of a martyr is the same as Hobo’s Blues
Desire lines
As you live your life out and your history is cast
The things you wanted most produce the legacy that lasts
Desire is like a bridge between your future and the past
Desire lines
Chorus
All consequence and circumstance defer to let us through
The magnets in our heads will channel what we really do
Like a raindrop to the gutter they will channel me to you
Desire lines
Chorus x2
