Moderate tempo. Upbeat. Lighter orchestration than normal for me. Only used 3 sounds from my synthesizer, main one being 12-string guitar. The one-and-only time I performed this live (very early 1980's), I just strummed a 6-string acoustic.

Soloist. Songwriter/singer. ASCAP member. A NICE WITNESS FOR CHRIST There is an extensive interview of me done by Scott Crawford, at . Do not let the site name alarm you. It is an "adult-themed music and entertainment" site. It is not a porn site, and you will not get tagged for spam if you go there. Scott is a journalist of integrity, who asked pertinent and penetrating questions, then printed my answers verbatim. Both God and His son received much attention in the interview. REVIEWS: "Fancy keyboard playing is the backdrop for this positive and upbeat collection. Hackley's vocals are reminiscent of Burl Ives." Review by Brent Castillo, The Wichita Eagle, March 5, 2005. "world's wimpiest Christian rocker". Brother Russell Podcast; : INFLUENCES (a very lengthy list, ending with...) "and of course, Richard Hackley." "Yet the songs on the Worst of the Worst can be compelling in their awfulness. Songs like Richard Hackley's rabble-rousing, hackles-raising spiritual God's Backhand ("We're not talking about tennis or Ping-Pong!") "; "Richard Hackley... HUGE musical influence. And a real bad mofo live.";

Story behind the song
Sometimes it seems progress on a project gets stalled. There are things we can try to get things moving again. I wanted a song about one other thing to try when everything else fails. This is a song about fiery, but controlled, anger. FYI this song has not seen the light of day since my sole performance of it in the early 80's. It was rec'd well, but then went on the back, back burner for whatever reason.
Lyrics
(v.1) You've been renewing your mind, spending time, Running verses through your head. But it seems the old man has the upper hand, Even though God said he's dead. And you don't think you're growing, And you wonder of you're going to win the fight. (v.2) Maybe you wonder, if it's all a blunder And what you thought was light isn't right. Well, stop - those doubts - toss 'em out. 'Cause that's how the devil got to Eve. Get re-convinced. Forget that you ever even winced. And then try this one secret key.... (chorus 1) Get mad. Don't be afraid to get mad. The Devil ain't kiddin' around. And there ain't no neutral ground. So get mad. (v.3) But not at God, or his family, Or yourself, and not at me. It's the Devil, you see, and that dead old man That you used to be. And they're in cahoots. And they've got a real smart plan To keep you from bringing out your new man. (chorus 2) Get mad. Don't be afraid to get mad. They love to rip you off. But Christ in you can make them stop. So get mad. (v.4) Yeah, show him your stuff. Show him your tough. Show him you can lower the boom. Make it real clear, when he speaks of fear, Just who's afraid of whom. Jesus Christ was his doom. And now you ain't got no room For slavery to a goon, who'll soon be in the tomb. (chorus 3) Get mad. Don't be afraid to get mad. You and God make a stand. You and God make a mighty stand. And get mad.
