Spanner in the can (Ron Green)
Co-write with my good friend Ron Green of Carlisle. It's about trying to apologise.
I'm easily inspired either by personal experiences, things said in conversation, being given a challenge, or being moved or amused by something. Many genres.
Story behind the song
Co-write with Ron Green of Carlisle.
I think Ron has a really distinctive voice and I love what he's done with my lyrics.
Lyrics
Like all the rest, I do my best, to get things right,
Sleep well at night, like all the rest, I do my best,
But sometimes get it wrong.
In my life I give my all to play the game,
What a shame, when something that I’ve said has hurt you,
Hurt you all along.
Chorus
We can all put a spanner in the can,
Spill salt in jam,
Treat somebody wrong sometime
We can all put a fire in the works,
Nothing worse than being way out of line.
Way out of line.
If things are bad I know I have to stay cool,
Play by the rules, but sometimes without thinking yea,
I act just like a clown
Through sun and rain I always aim, to never lie,
And never moan, I try in vain to never let
Anybody down.
Chorus
We can all put a spanner in the can,
Spill salt in jam,
Treat somebody wrong sometime
We can all put a fire in the works,
Nothing worse than being way out of line.
Way out of line.
Bridge
But when something I say can you hurt so bad,
It’s clear that saying sorry’s not enough,
I’ll try to make it up to you, please don’t be mad,
‘Cause I’m finding it rough, finding it rough.
