My first real appreciation for music hit me the first time I saw the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show. The emotion and enthusiasm of the audience on that small black and white screen was a real eye opener for me. I began writing songs a few years later as a teenager and decided to teach myself to play guitar. What better way to impress girls, right? As I matured as a writer it was my love for a good story song that morphed me into a country songwriter. I enjoy reading articles about other songwriters, and one of my biggest influences was a Johnny Cash quote that said he used the "KISS" method of writing. An acronym for "Keep It Simple Stupid", and I thought that sounded pretty easy. Was I ever WRONG! I have learned that creating a song that comes across as conversational and uncomplicated was not as easy as it sounded. After several years of writing, and many stacks of spiral bound notebooks, I slowly turned into a better writer as I learned to draw from life's experiences. My dad was a career military man, and I was born on an Army base in Augusta, Georgia. Growing up I spent summers on my grandparents farm in Louisiana, and so I am forever filled with a deep love for the south. My family and I live in the Flint Hills of Kansas. This site contains a portion of my catalog which is pitched daily in Nashville. Lyrics
Today was granddad’s birthday - he knew they’d be there So he got up early - put on his best, combed his hair Skipped his daily walk to the cafe - to have coffee with the boys Cause ever since grandma passed away - his only other joy’s When they come He moved his porch chair to the sidewalk - so he could better see the street He always naps at one o’clock - but today he didn’t sleep He spent the afternoon by the telephone - so he could answer when they called To let ‘em know he’s always home - any time’ll work at all When they come He’s got three grown kids and two of them - live within ten miles But none of them have visited - him in quite awhile Nothin’ beats the feelin’ he gets - holdin’ a grand child Today was his birthday - he couldn’t wait for them to come He washed up his supper dishes - but left the cake uncut So he could have dessert with - them when they showed up He waited on the front porch - ‘til it got to dark to see And left a note on the front door - be sure to wake me When you come He’s got three grown kids and two of them - live within ten miles But none of them have visited - him in quite awhile Nothin’ beats the feelin’ he gets - holdin’ a grand child Today was his birthday - he couldn’t wait for them to come He said “Hon they’ve all got busy lives To young to know how fast time flies” As he kissed the picture of his bride goodnight He’s got three grown kids and two of them - live within ten miles But none of them have visited - him in quite awhile Nothin’ beats the feelin’ he gets - holdin’ a grand child Today was his birthday - he couldn’t wait for them to come Today was granddad’s birthday
