Story behind the song
Most of Mayer's music resonates with me, but this one took my breath away. Whereas Mayer sings softly and imploringly, like a good boyfriend to a father, I intentionally sang this like a daughter to a father -- the direct connection that requires no soft-spoken words or tiptoeing about. A boyfriend runs that risk, of offending. A daughter doesn't. The relationship of a daughter and father is candid and real. Having had a wonderful father, and seeing those who haven't, I wanted to unapologetically pronounce Mayer's sage advice strongly and clearly through my vocals.
Lyrics
