Story behind the song
Written about being away from home for a month and the long car ride home anticipating arriving. I had been working on this song for a couple of years before and it was actually about something completely different. I was never able to finish it for some reason. The Chorus fit that trip so well that I rewrote the rest of the song and it fell right into place in a few minutes.
Lyrics
Chorus:
There's 200 miles between me and Lafayette, and these highway signs are leading me there fast.
Darling when I see you, I'm going to give you a smile.
Don't it feel good to be home for a while.
Verse:
It's the 11th hour of this 14 hour drive
And my skin begins to crawl as my senses come alive
Good music and good company have done all they can do
But nothing soothes my soul like the simple sight of you.
Verse:
I've been gone so long I can't recall exactly what its like
To brush aside your hair and see the comfort in your eyes
I've paid my dues, you've sacrificed and now it won't be long
I'll be coming home so soon you'll think I was never gone.
Chorus:
There's 200 miles between me and Lafayette, and these highway signs are leading me there fast.
Darling when I see you, I'm going to give you a smile.
Don't it feel good to be home for a while.
Outro:
There's 200 miles between me and Lafayette, and these highway signs are leading me there fast.
