Story behind the song
I recently revised this to "Come To The Stable" because I felt it would show a stronger correlation between the gifts of the Magi and the gifts we bring to the Lord each week.
I was initially inspired to write Come to the Table by a commentary I was reading on the Gospel of Matthew. The authors point, as it related to the Magi coming to give homage to the newborn King of the Jews, is how their gifts could represent gifts we might bring to the Altar. The Magi brought gold, frankincense and myrrh, a Magis tools of their trade. These gifts represented who they were and their livelihood and were offered up to Jesus to recognize that everything they have now belongs to their new King, Jesus Christ. Our gold would be the fruits of our labor from our livelihood, our frankincense would be our prayers lifted up to heaven, and our myrrh would be our humanity or ourselves physically. When the Magi received Jesus the first time, I believe that their hearts were converted and when they were told in a dream to go home a different way, it meant more than just geography, it meant go home changed. It should mean the same to us in this day and age when we Come To The Table of the Lord with our gifts, we should receive the Lord and go home a different way, changed.
