Story behind the song
The first line, "may the road rise to meet you", comes from an Irish blessing that's been stuck in my head for years, and the rest of the song just rolled right off. We all wish the best for our outbound friends, but it's a double-edged thing. This was written for my friend Iain who went to live overseas. I looked at banjo players in a new light after playing this one. The banjo I'm playing is over 100 years old. I like the harmonies at the end of this.
Lyrics
May the road rise to meet you May the sun shine upon your back May the winters not grow colder May the summers hurry back. May the rain fall miles behind you May the wind be in your sails May the love you look for find you May your footsteps never fail May your instinct never falter May the music ease your mind May the sadness make you stronger May the laughter make you kind May your fortune come to happen May the money be in the mail May the circle stay unbroken And may your footsteps never fail Come gather up your thoughts and say goodbye to all the old familiar haunts. There's solice on the highway, there's wisdom in the woods and anything you need I'll send along. May the starlight serve to guide you May the grey skies turn to blue May the moonshine light the darkness May my own way lead back to you May the strangers understand you as you walk the foreign trail May your burden slow you down none And may your footsteps never fail
