Story behind the song
Written based on an idea from Ann Keeler Evans in support of programs to feed children during the 68 hours over weekends when no school-based food programs are available. Immeasurable editing advice from Terri Peterson
Lyrics
1
Hungry kids don’t make the news;
I’m glad the schools still give them food.
But sixty-eight hours pass;
From Friday noon until they break the fast.
Don’t accept it.
CHORUS:
Children cannot concentra-ate
When they’re playing Hunger Ga-ames.
Empty plate for Sixty-eight
Empty plate for Sixty-eight
2
That hungry selfie that you’ll never see
Won’t help Johnny learn to read.
You say it’s not your problem, but just you wait.
You’ll be counting kids with damaged brains.
You can do the math.
CHORUS
3
Little motor development, synapses don’t fire
I’d like to be funny; that would make me a liar.
I’d love me some snark ‘bout the list of effects
But that spiral is down; let’s call it neglect.
It’ll only get worse.
