Story behind the song
If a man is lucky, he befriends a woman who makes him aware of things that might have otherwise escaped him. Sadly, he often loses her.
Lyrics
A Thousand Miles Away
Dan Edwards 2014
Well now once I knew this woman she had flowers in her hair,
Never owned a car, no, she went walking everywhere,
And she always had a smile for the people she would meet,
I’m certain that the root of it was in the movement of her feet,
‘Cause she’d walk until the day turned slowly into night,
And there were times she would take my hand and make me feel alright.
She taught me about perception, she taught me how to see,
Tried to get me not to worry about things that were beyond the scope of me.
One day… one day, well she walked away.
A thousand miles away.
Now, like a drowning man trying to get to land I reach out to try and hold her hand, but she has slipped away.
And that thousand miles has turned to stone I'm sitting here I am all alone.
Yeah that thousand miles has turned to stone I am sitting here all alone just thinking of her.
Well I pull myself together and I go out for a walk,
It seemed to work for her so I think “what the hell, why not”,
And I walk on down the road and as the cars they pass me by,
I think of something she once said to me as I look them in the eye, she said…
“Do you know where you’re going? Do you wonder where you have been?
Do you think about life and the beauty of things?
Are you drinking it in?...are you drinking it in?
Or are you strictly driving? Keep it going straight ahead,
Keep it on the straight and narrow until the day that you are dead,
Keep it on the straight and narrow….until the day you are dead?”
She said,
“Me I walk without thinking which direction I should take,
Sometimes I just don’t think about the decisions that I make,
I just walk and walk and walk and hope it all works out okay,
But it seems the only thing that happens is I end up a thousand miles away.”
A thousand miles away.
And like that drowning man trying to get to land I’m still reaching out to trying to hold her hand.
But that thousand miles has turned to stone and I’m sitting here all alone.
Yeah that thousand miles has turned to stone and I am sitting here I am all alone just thinking of her.
Yeah that thousand miles has turned to stone and I am sitting here, all alone just thinking of her.
