Story behind the song
It is about living in Toronto, growing up in the city, and the struggles I had to go through.
Lyrics
Verse 1: Born and raised in a city of civil rights But we had to live the struggle where the money was tight We wasn't accustomed to being rich We didn't sport on many name brands of clothing like Abercrombie and Fitch Living in 416, that was the area code Everyday we was living was always a new episode Television, Nintendo 64 We saved up all our money for what we couldn't afford Taxes, taxes, everything was taxes parents working to the point of making their backs quit We couldn't fight time, cause' time was getting meaner With every second passing only death was getting nearer. They said Randell you be goin eighteen whatchu really wanna do whatchu really gon' be? Living in a place where freedom was never free Till the day that I'm gone I'ma just be me Verse 2: I lived never having respect for politics Cause' we lived in a system that people could never fix We had the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, But authorities, were running the streets, thinking we people didn't need em' Life felt like a heavy burden of shackled chains Cuffed around me while I get hit by the lightning and the heavy rain Can't take the pain and still having all this contempt for earth Looking beyond the limits of this world since my day of birth. Homes were never owned, governments were the scams Insurance were the crooks who laundered money from the banks And we're the people that they overlook, Life should really mean more than just graduating after having your face in books But people were looking the same way Taking the same path, living the same day Paying the same tax, Playing the same game But a new era will come by and bring over the change
