A song from 2007, that I dug up for the Clickers Club "Challenging songs" player.

New band name for my one man band. The ancient form of my first name.
My name is Holger Luth. I was about 15 years old, when I got my first guitar. Actually it belonged to an older friend, but the never played it, so he let me borrow it. I had been taking piano lessons earlier, but I hated it. The most fun I had with the piano, was to create my own little tunes. i was no good at repetitive rehearsing. It has been the same with my guitar playing. Many of my guitar playing friends, spent hours rehearsing technical stuff. I never had the patience for that, I just did what I thought sounded right. My mind was more directed towards songwriting, than towards being the guitar hero, though I did like to play neverending live solos, long enough to make the bass player make puking sounds and the drummer start throwing sticks at me... I played in both small and larger bands with up to 8-9 people, with violins, flutes and lots of other instruments, but I think my best time in a band, was playing in a three piece. It was in the aftermath of Police, British New Wave, the Danish Punk scene, Danish songwriters like C.V. Jorgensen and many more. You had to invent a lot of new "big" chords, in order to create a bigger sound, being the only guitarist ( and lead singer). Later I started listening a lot to bands like U2, The Cure, Pink Floyd, Kraftwerk and most of all Peter Gabriel. Peter is like my guiding star. I have had the luck of seeing him in concert a couple of times in the recent years and even if he has gained a few pounds and is called "Papa Bear" by his bass player, he can still sing better than anyone I know. His voice is directly wired to his heart, it's like every word has its' own set of wings and flies out of his mouth, carrying an important message. Wish I could get anywhere near that! My musical taste has developed over the years and I try out a lot of different genres, out of curiosity and because I get inspired by other musicians, here on SC and by other friends in music. I have 3 sons, that are all engaged in music somehow and they have also inspired me a lot. They have a totally different take on the term "Musician", than I have and I find it inspiring and I am amazed at the multifaceted way they can tackle the tasks of a songwriter, producer and musician. I must admit, that my music sounds a little old fashioned compared to music of today, but what the heck.. I am from 1957, I grew up with Beatles, Stones, Kinks, The Who, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Jefferson Airplane, The Band, Bob Dylan.. need I say more?

Story behind the song
I wrote this song in 2007, but was very much in doubt how to record it. It was very personal and important to me and I wanted to go down some new roads when recording it. After some attempts, I decided to go all-in and just go for it. But I was still a bit afraid what people would say. Luckily most people thought it was OK :)
Lyrics
Climbing high, a fearless boy, a shadow ‘gainst the sunlight. Flying in the tallest of trees and falling in slow-motion. Schoolyard bullies on your back, teachers claim to own the truth - Suspecting blue-eyed innocence and crushing those defenseless souls. Never turn your inside out, hide your fear and loneliness. Cherish the precious moments when, they will treat you as a friend. A terrorized And lonely child, longing for security. Boulders weighing on his back - father do you love me? Why this pain? Why hurt the kid? To breed a full grown man, they said. A disillusioned punching bag? Please - Can I have my money back? Never turn….. Uh-ah, Uh-ah, Never turn….. Chasing love so headlessly, betrayed by lack of confidence. Long for what you’ll never get, and regret it – if you get it. Momentary happiness, loving friends and children’s smiles. All in all - how was life? Is there a smile behind your tears?

This is a really great song Holger with some very personal, emotional and heartfelt lyrics and vocal performance. I really like the arrangement you've put together here with the drums, synthbass, the choir and the strings. Very nice work! Also the vocals effects sounds really great. Excellent work!

Once reading your story I immediately listened to this song. The emotional energy in your vocals is captivating. One could sense your feelings. Great vocal effects…love the addition of the choir. Very heartrending and poignant lyrics that moved me. It takes courage to expose your uncertainties reservations about life. I salute you in the highest way. Bravo. Bravo. Thanks so much for sharing this personal song with us.

Hey Holger I listened to this song on the clickers page and read the story you wrote but forgot to come over and comment until today. Anyway it sounds like a difficult song but you made it sound easy. It is great to know that there are people like you in here who can put it all out there. I know thats not easy. Someone once said (I forget now who it was) Only honest people sing...well I think we all understand what they meant. Anyway this song sounds great! Your vocals, writing and instrumentation are all first class and your older production sounds great too!

There is so much emotion in this song. I feel it everywhere. I read your story of the making of. Trying and trying, doubting about the fact that it may be too heavy for the people listening, chasing them away. I think the most important thing here is the fact that you were able to transport your feeling about your childhood into music. In this case you shouldn't look too much to the listeners. This is the deepest track I heard from you until now. Yes, it is kind of dark and heavy, but also a kind of therapy and the "making of" a struggle for you. Thanks for sharing it with the Clickers together with the story which is always very interesting on this blog. One question: Was this song a relief for you, finally?

Absolutely a great composition lyrically and musically. Not an easy task writing a descriptive story in a song - you do it well Tolger. Some cool vocal effects (vocorder maybe?) - nice touch with the choir. Excellent ballad!

Rodrica's comments nearly echo my thoughts and feeings. This song is so "personal"..not just in the lyrics or vocal delivery but in the arrangement as well. There are so many different elements coming into play in this. It's like a musical collage. Cathartic work that glows with the true Indie Spirit.
What a powerful song, in about every sense of the word, Holger! The sound, the lyrics, the performances, the bass... this is a progressive masterpiece.

I think some of the best songs come from times like this, they have a soul and sincerity that cannot be faked. I often reach into my childhood for my songs - those days are often both the best and worst of our lives. I can feel the intensity of emotion in this song and the outpouring of feelings that have been hidden for many years. Quite a dramatic track, dark in places, yet healing...the feeling that demons have been laid to rest. Really pleased that you shared this one with the Clickers Club and everyone here at Soundclick - many will relate to the story.
