Singer-songwriter, arranger and producer: acoustic contemporary folk but ranging into rock/blues/country/jazz/humour...all very eclectic, I'm afraid!
Martin Stirrup Singer/songwriter An old folkie who got back into it... These days I sing and play guitar(s) and other stringed instruments, then score and orchestrate where appropriate. My taste becomes increasingly eclectic ranging from finger-picked folk through country to soft rock mixed in with a few more alternative and eccentric numbers, including the odd novelty foxtrot...

Story behind the song
This guy was the head monk at the stunning Jain Temple of Ranakpur in Rajasthan. He was very cheerful, very chatty and extracted many rupees from us for the upkeep of his temple. It was very peaceful there.
Lyrics
E E E E A A E E (B7 B7 E E) I met this guy in saffron, said he was a Jain He put a tikka on my forehead, asked me to think again He said outside was a hassle, outside was a rush Outside was a battle your serenity would crush Inside was a haven, inside was at peace He lived here in tranquillity his rations were his feast He lived for meditation the temple was his home It sounded like stagnation, I’ve got this urge to roam But he sounded quite convincing so I said I’d have a try So I sat there like a langhur and unfocussed my eye The air was cool and scented, the silence it was deep I jerked my eyes back open thought I must have been asleep I felt refreshed and peaceful, I thought I’d been there hours But my watch had hardly altered; he handed me a flower He said maybe you should stay here, see how you will fare I said sorry but ten minutes was all that I could spare A A E E A A B G E There are places now in cities where you go to have a ziz And people say power napping is really where it is But now I’ve thought of something better that’s bound to be the rage Yes power meditation’s set to be the latest craze With power meditation take a hold of your life Power meditation cuts through stress like a knife I think I’ll start a franchise, that’s what I’ll do Soon power meditation’ll be coming to a city near you
