In "Happy Harmonies" style, a multitracked song by Peter Hall
Had a radio show on 2KA (Sydney, Australia) for 17 years. Played around the Sydney area.
Story behind the song
In the true spirit of the "Happy Harmony" sessions, Peter Hall has had a go at replicating the sound, and has multitracked himself with all instruments & vocals.
The instruments are;
- Soprano Ukulele
- 5 string banjo
- Resonator guitar (lap)
- electric bass
- 6 string non-pedal lapsteel. (the same lapsteel owned and played by Eric Hall)
The Resonator Aria guitar is tuned G-B-D-G-B-D which is standard resonator guitar tuning.
The 6 string Guyatone non-pedal lapsteel is tuned A-C#-E-A-B-E.
The pedal steel "effect" comes from bending the "B" string on the left hand side of the slide/tone/steel bar with my left ring finger.
(This is where knowing music theory comes in handy. The "top" "E" & "B" string becomes the "5th" chord, but when you "bend the string", the notes include the 4th note; making it "1st" root chord. Therefore, when you bend the string, you can play the root chord, or the relative minor in a penatonic scale. It's called "cheating a bit". It gives the impression of the pedal steel sound without having any pedals !. Love dat slidey sound !)
By tuning the lapsteel up a step from reso tuning, you are not restricted to open tunings, and therefore, can get that "Hony Tonk" sound.
The song is a "throw back" to 50's evangelical meetings with the novelty of the phone line mixed with a call (pun intended) to connect (yep...pun intended) to Jesus
