Hanging with the COOL KID
If it's hot then give God the glory. If it's not, then blame me
If it's hot then give God the glory. If it's not then blame Mitch.
I'm Joe Johnson a local United Methodist Pastor. Before I felt God calling me into the ministry I thought I was going to be a rap artist. For 8 years I did nothing with music until my wife introduced me to a group called "The Gospel Gansters" in 1998. It was an eye opening experience. I was amazed to see people using rap for the glory of God. That day I picked up paper and pen and I haven't put it down yet.
Story behind the song
When I was in school you followed the crowd to be cool. Jesus turned that notion upside down. He wasn't looking for the crowd. He was looking for a true disciple to follow him. Stop worrying about what others think and do, focus on what would Jesus do. Because he loves you just as you are.
Lyrics
Chest bumps in the hallway, stomping on the bleachers,
just trying to fit in, and hang out with the cool kids
I was never Mr. Popular
As a senior I had to hung out with the sophomores
I liked this girl but I never got a call from her
She was so pretty aint nobody topping her
When she walked in the room- time stopped.
I’m telling you this girl, she was tip top
I froze every time I tried to talk
like Uhhhhhhhhhhh she was like "Get lost!"
Now thing change and times change one thing remains though
Chest bumps in the hallway, stomping on the bleachers;
just trying to fit in and hang out like the cool kids do,
Like cool kids do Running the whole school
So walk like they walk. Try to talk like they talk
Just to hang out with the cool kids
So I went to college but I didn’t learn to after it
That the coolest kid around didn't even got his bachelorate
He was never a graduate, and the people wasn’t having it
They said who is this upstart young kid from Nazareth
A trail blazer a true Maverick
A doc who came not for the well, but for the sick
He refused to fit in
we were different from him
we were more concerned about what other people where thinking,
(because)
Thing change and times change one thing remains though
We’re still trying to fit in, everywhere that we go- oh
Chest bumps in the hallway, stomping on the bleachers;
all we want to do fit in and hang out like the cool kids do
like the cool kids do. Running the whole school
So walk like they walk Try to talk like they talk
Just to hang out with the cool kids
So I'm thinking about thiscool kids
And everything he did
Knew all our sins yet he choose to forgive
Saved us from the judgement
so that we could repent
called us to new life that'ld be better than this
He called us to follow him
from the wises like Solomon
to the lowest kid without a friend
we’re hollow without him.
then the truth hit me like a ton of bricks
now I’m telling my own kids this
(because)
Thing change and times change, one thing remains though
You can be yourself, Someone like you are-oh!
Chest bumps in the hallway, stomping on the bleachers;
but if you really want to be cool Just do what Christ would do
What Christ would do I’m a take this old school
Walk like he walks. Try to talk like he talks
Thing change and times change, one thing remains though
You can be yourself, Your loved just as you are-oh!
Chest bumps in the hallway, stomping on the bleachers;
but if you really want to be cool Just ask what Christ would do
What Christ would do I’m a take this old school
Walk like he walks, Try to talk like he talks
Ask what would Christ do.
Chest bumps in the hallway, stomping on the bleachers;
but if you really want to be cool Just ask what Christ would do
What Christ would do What Christ would do.
What would Jesus do?
