Story behind the song
*WARNING*
If you would rather enjoy this piece of art and have it come to mean something truly unique to you, do not read the backstory. Just as the band “Aerosmith” once criticized the music video industry of robbing fans from having their own visions of imagery associated to a song and supplanting it with some “official” footage, so too can knowing a songs backstory potentially come to rob it of having some special place and meaning for you.
Or both can exist. It’s all really subjective. Proceed with understanding.
Thank you,

The Official Backstory
This needs to start off with a disclaimer. I don't do, nor advocate, doing acid. I don't do, not advocate, using drugs as an escape from your life's problems.
That said, this song was a light hearted poke at some friends of mine who did once do both of those things. I was at a party at Dave's house and some people were trying acid for the first time. I was pretty drunk, and trying half-heartedly to discourage this. I thought by poking a little fun at the idea that the other options for their intended escapism were insufficient, it came to needing something stronger than all of that stuff - California Sunshine Microdot, as it turned out that night.
Everything about this song is poorly put together, especially the lyrics. Maybe you like them and think they are pointed to the context. Ultimately it's a song about getting wasted made while wasted.
I was in Nerado Black during this period. We actually did play this in the live set for about a year. Hopefully an old recording will surface.

Oh I remember
Not how I lost myself, but that I felt alone
Friday night I'm wasted
Under sunlight powered moonbeams
But my conscience is one lost soul, now
I try to remember
But I'm lost in twilight
The drinking and the drugs, they just weren't good enough
How I love
My California Sunshine
(Take a hit of the California Sunshine)
I'll get high, I'll get high as I like
I just need some papers and a bottle of black stuff, oh
I need to get away
'Cause my past is haunting me daily
I know when it's feeling right
It gently seduces my bloodstream
I try to remember
But I'm lost in twilight
The drinking and the drugs, they weren't good enough
How I love
My California Sunshine
(Take a hit of the California Sunshine)
The drinking and the drugs, they weren't good enough
How I love
My California Sunshine
(Take a hit of California Sunshine)
