Story behind the song
I talked to a woman I knew about whether or not she had gotten any gifts from her family for Mother's Day. She replied kind of sadly, "No. It's just a day." I felt that this was a terrible shame for this woman worked hard every day providing for her family and sometimes caring for her children while working simultaneously. Of all mothers, she deserved something special on Mother's Day. I wrote this song to express my frustration against her family and my wish that I could somehow give her just a single rose to make her feel loved, if that were appropriate.
Lyrics
A Rose for Romaine
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Chorus
It's just a day,
Just the one day made just for her.
Seems like forever.
Yet, nothing for Romaine.
It's just a day
Like the hundreds that came before
Giving her all for
Her world, her life, her pain.
Verse One
Sunday through Friday
It all looks the same.
She's awake before sunrise,
Sunshine or rain.
A mother at work,
A mother at home.
Life like a metronome.
Chorus
It's just a day,
Just the one day made just for her.
Seems like forever.
Yet, nothing for Romaine.
Like no one sees
Past their spotless reflections
In pools of deception.
Content like kings to reign.
Verse Two
A few paper flowers
And one rubber band.
A year of surrender
Held in one hand.
A passionless gift.
The tears never flow;
Lost in the undertow.
Verse Three
You suffer in silence
You get little praise
You care for your loved ones
With patience and grace
Take this one rose,
And know that I see
The pain of their apathy.
Chorus
For, it's just a day,
Just the one day made just for her.
Seems like forever.
Yet, nothing for Romaine.
It's just a day
Like the hundreds before,
But there is something more.
There's a Healer for the pain.
Take this one rose
And know that He sees
The pain of their apathy.
