The most devastating natural disaster in recorded history occurred Dec. 26, 2004 in the Indian Ocean and is known as the Boxing Day tsunamis. A 9.0 earthquake off the coast of Banda Aceh created tsunamis that killed 227,898 people in 14 countries.
