Story behind the song
Every once in awhile I listen to some of the old secular songs that I used to listen to in high school. Once I was doing this when I was driving my family through the night across three states to my boyhood home in Nebraska. It was about 2 a.m. and a time when I would usually be dozing off and not very alert. Everyone else in the car was sleeping. Because I was listening to this music on the radio, I was wide awake. I was thinking, "I can't believe I listened to this stuff." The music was great, but the words were vile. Suddenly, a car was coming toward me in my lane at about 60 mph. It was pitch black outside and I couldn't tell what was on either side of the road. I decided that anything was better than a head-on collision; so, at the last instant, I jerked the van to the right, not knowing if I would be going down a steep embankment. By God's grace there was a good shoulder on the side of the road. The oncoming vehicle just grazed the side of our van, leaving a mark of gray paint on the side. Needless to say, it woke everybody up in the van. When we got to the next town there were lots of teenagers partying in the streets (It was high school graduation time.). I figured we had just had an encounter with a drunk driver. The song is called "Out of the Darkness." I had left much of my secular music interests in the rearview mirror, and was now writing Christian music. I'm glad that Christ called me out of darkness.
Lyrics
In the darkness I cant see. Shine Your light on me.
Jesus Youre the light, the way, the truth, and the life.
Help me see You day by day. Guide us through the night.
Help me follow You until You come back to stay
And forever, with Your church, reign in endless day
Then well rejoice with our Lord, as we dwell in Heavn
Well reap eternal reward, all our sins forgivn
All the pains of life are past. Well be home at last
In the meantime, while we wait, let Your Spirit guide
Prompting our hearts as we pray and in You confide
Lord, sustain us in the fray and in us abide.
