Story behind the song
Hey DJ Gimme The Beat (Vocal House Mix) was inspired by the happy memories of clubbing weekends I shared with friends & lovers throughout the 1970s, '80s & '90s. Every night that I went clubbing in the UK I regularly took with me new & exciting 12" vinyl promo records & remixes of future club hits that hadn't yet been officially released. They were supplied to me by Penny & Colin of Siren Records in Derby UK & Linda of Hudsons in Chesterfield UK, plus a few other record stores I used to shop at in Nottingham, Sheffield, Manchester & London too of course. As an aspiring '70s DJ I was on many DJ mailing lists & got my hands on quite a lot of pre-release 12" vinyl from the UK, Europe & the USA. I still have well over 3,000 12" vinyl records in my lock-up store. A very rare unlabeled promo release I still own is Evelyn Champagne Kings biggest hit Shame, one of the first Disco & chart hits to only be released on 12", plus many more Disco classics from Thelma Houston, Micheal Zager Band, T-Connection, Giorgio Moroder & Sylvester to name but a few. In the '80s I was lucky enough to get promos of West End Girls, You Spin Me Right Round & the Patrick Cowley remix of I Feel Love over a year before their official release. One of the clubs I frequented with friends was the Birmingham gay club The Nightingale, (the original club), with it's incredibly young, extremely talented resident DJ Tony De Vit. (Not forgetting the clubs other resident DJ 'Funky' Duncan, who was instrumental in setting up the High Energy record label Loading Bay, with it's amazing string of "hits" by some very talented UK, European & North American producers & artists). I took literally hundreds of promo & pre-release 12" vinyl out with me over the years & Tony De Vit & 'Funky' Duncan always appreciated me leaving certain records with them until the following weekend. By then they had got their own promo copies too. Tony De Vit was progressing rapidly as a much sought after guest DJ at gay clubs worldwide, eventually gaining top billing at mega-clubs in the UK such as London's Trade and Ministry Of Sound, as well as Liverpool's Cream and Birmingham's Miss Moneypenny's. He also had a string of personally produced club hits giving him three top 40 UK chart hits with 'Burning Up', 'Hooked' & 'I'll Be There' in 1995 & 1996. He was also well-known as a celebrity remixer for various dance compilation albums, as well as working as a DJ for London's Kiss FM. Tony De Vit carried on as a DJ whilst becoming an innovative producer throughout the '90s especially in the Hard House genre. His records were released on various Indie labels & Trade compilation albums that he also mixed. He remixed many club scene tracks for exciting, upcoming Techno & Hard House artists & bands during his later career. On 2July 1998, at the age of 40, Tony died of bronchial failure, reportedly brought on after contracting H.I.V. Unfortunately after his death, a conflict kept his records off the shelves for many years, but finally a compilation album of his songs & remixes was released called 'Are You All Ready?' on Tidy Trax records, which I highly recommend. Tony De Vit is missed to this day by the worldwide clubbing scene, however his music will keep his memory alive for eons. Please don't hesitate to search out music from Tony De Vit on YouTube & good music download sites plus mp3 sales outlets. One of his biggest club hits was 'The Dawn' - (the massive 'drop' he strategically added in that very popular Trade club track has been reproduced on many dance tracks & still is today) - check it out on YouTube. Copy this link - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IcHSwx3dp78 I'm confident that if you like Hard House, Techno, Trance & Electronic dance music in general you'll definitely enjoy the outstanding music of Tony De Vit ! Or my names not.......! Have a great Summer, we all deserve it! Cheers, Clive.
