Story behind the song
Reworked a William Butler Yeats poem from 1899 with a change of perspective. Some slight updates in language, but otherwise fairly true to the original.
Lyrics
1. I Hear the Shadowy Horses, their long manes shake, Their hoofs heavy with turmoil their eyes glimmering white; The North unfolds above them clinging, creeping night, The East her hidden joy before the morning breaks the light 2. Is all love and life to end like this? An amorous spent sigh only to be missed? If time is spent and laced with pain and regrets How does the lovers separated ever forget? 3. The West weeps in pale dew and sighs passing away, The Horses of Disaster plunge into the heavy clay: The South is pouring down roses of crimson fire: O vanity of Sleep, Hope, Dream, endless Desire, 4. And hiding their tossing manes and their tumultuous feet. My love, let your eyes half close, and your heart beat Over my heart, and your hair fall upon over my chest Drowning love's lonely hour in a deep twilight of rest, If only our minds could blur The emotions this moment stirs If only eyes could weep My love Be at peace
