Story behind the song
Saw my grandkids playing pretend the other day, and thought about how we often do that at church, and with God. And the rest just came out. This will be one of the last tracks on the Playing Games With God album.
Lyrics
Somedays it’s fun to just be a monkey To OOO OOO and AAA AAA and play in the tree And it can be fun to pretend I’m a lion And roar and show claws and make dad scared of me I can even pretend I’m a ssssneaky old sssnake And I hissss jussst like thissss as I sssslither on by But when it comes to God, I don’t want to pretend If you listen then I’ll tell you why. Chorus: Because playing pretend is a whole lot of fun You can be a space pirate and dance on the sun Or pretend you’re a squirrel that fights with a sword Or a mouse that stops time with a wink and a word Pretend you’re a carrot, or a pea in a pod But it’s best to be honest when it comes to God For he knows everything, and you know, in the end We will have to explain why we’re Playing Pretend. I could go to my church and pretend that I’m perfect When I know I should tell God I’m sad I was wrong Or pretend I’m your friend when I’m really your foe Or just mouth the words, when I should sing along I could say that I’m broke when I know you’re in need Or pretend I am wheat when I’m really a weed But God is not fooled by all this pretend And the truth will come out in the end. Chorus:
