I'm Lyin'

Guitar based pop rock released by the band in a time when synth pop ruled the charts. You are who you are, you play what you play.

Guitarist, songwriter, singer in probably that order. On my own I lean toward blues rock licks and tones. In the studio: play for the song, always.
Welcome to my "band" page. I want to share some music I've recorded over the years. I was a member of one of the San Francisco Bay Area's top dance/show bands for 15 years. Today, the best cover bands are usually lucky if they can book a weekend in the same club and outside of the few true 'show' bands left playing a much smaller circuit, today's cover bands - at least in this area - can't make a living as fulltime musicians.

Story behind the song
The second generation of our 80s club band had cobbled together a decent 8 track home demo studio after spending the big bucks professionally recording our earlier original songs. The idea now was to get down as many completed song demos as we could and shop for a deal. In this version of the band we had more rock and roll horsepower, compared to the rock and soul, country rock and pop of version 1.0. We now rocked on our originals and whatever we could manage to on covers in the dance clubs. We were staring directly in the face of the dreaded new wave and alt rock music which was popular in the clubs where we played in fulltime... 'the money gigs.' We Loved our fans but were lukewarm on the hits of the day. But you'd never know it to see our live club show..any version of the band, any year. The musicianship in version 2.0 was strengthened through the addition of Dan Fraley on keys and guitar. We recorded a couple dozen complete tunes, shopped them to record labels and released the best six to our fans, selling our music and T-shirts and other band stuff from the stage at our nightly performances. "I'm Lyin" was one of The Big Six. Rob D sings lead. The rest of the band is on our instruments and vocals. Basics were always cut live in the studio and the few overdubs were usually first or second take. These quickly done demos were some of the most honest, "We can play this Live -just like this- tonight" type stuff we ever did. Some of these songs begged for a revisit/rewrite and re-record with more production. I got around to doing that with "Lucky 2-Night" (also available for a listen on this page) a few years later, albeit it in a much less sophisticated studio but with 1990s effects..(wow!) Speaking of effects, initial production was bare-bones minimal on these slam em out band demos, so I added a few things when remastering "I'm Lyin" a couple years ago. I only had access to (quasi) master tapes, so no addtional recording was possible. Just a little (studio) magic dust. -Steve2000, July 04
