Story behind the song
One of the More difficult choices that I have made in my life was to reject my professional background as a Social Worker and a Counselor. I have come to beleive that the professions based in Modern Psychological thought are over-compartmentalized and basically reduce the Human Experience to what Anthony Burgess called "A Clockwork Orange". In otherewords something that has the appearance of being sweet, organic, juicy, full of life, but is essentially nothing but gears and sprockets. While I have known a number of truly caring and gifted "helpers", the Mental Health profession, as a whole, has been driven by the managed care companies to reduce the hopes, fears, and dreams of those in need to symptoms and diagnoses. Beleive it or not, I had a therapist once call me histrionic because I was deeply moved by the beauty of a sunset, and grandiose becasue I feel that I am a unique and special individual with something to share with the world. I am glad that i have walked away from that into a world where is it a beautiful thing to be flawed, passionate, and original.
Lyrics
The Machine Break me down, break me down To less than whole Take the parts, take the pieces Take my soul Reduce me to nothing more than A list of names Teach me how, how to play your Nothing games Analyze the reasons why I am me Make me into what you think I should be Diagnose my hopes and fears, Who I am Turn me into just another Grain of sand To turn away To walk away What would it mean? Or else become a part. . . Another part Of the Machine If I listen to all your lies I’ll be dead I’ll give you all the life that’s in My heart and head You tell me if I live your way I’ll be saved You’ll turn me in to just another Mindless slave To turn away To walk away What would it mean? Or else become a part. . . Another part Of the Machine
