Soloist. Songwriter/singer. ASCAP member. A NICE WITNESS FOR CHRIST There is an extensive interview of me done by Scott Crawford, at . Do not let the site name alarm you. It is an "adult-themed music and entertainment" site. It is not a porn site, and you will not get tagged for spam if you go there. Scott is a journalist of integrity, who asked pertinent and penetrating questions, then printed my answers verbatim. Both God and His son received much attention in the interview. REVIEWS: "Fancy keyboard playing is the backdrop for this positive and upbeat collection. Hackley's vocals are reminiscent of Burl Ives." Review by Brent Castillo, The Wichita Eagle, March 5, 2005. "world's wimpiest Christian rocker". Brother Russell Podcast; : INFLUENCES (a very lengthy list, ending with...) "and of course, Richard Hackley." "Yet the songs on the Worst of the Worst can be compelling in their awfulness. Songs like Richard Hackley's rabble-rousing, hackles-raising spiritual God's Backhand ("We're not talking about tennis or Ping-Pong!") "; "Richard Hackley... HUGE musical influence. And a real bad mofo live.";

Story behind the song
This was originally an instrumental for a jazz dance class. The lyrics were added later. The lyric subject matter didn't happen until I found a catchy 4 syllable phrase that synched well with a frequent and catchy 4-note phrase of music. That marriage became the hook, and the rest of the lyrics grew from the 4-syllable phrase. The full lyrics portray, in a sports analogy, that God does not force Himself on us, but when we invite Him into our game plan, we then have the potential to never lose.
Lyrics
(v.1) Don’t try to play out this game all alone. The team that we face is too big and too strong. They’ll move in ways that no human can see So we need someone with better eyesight on our team. (chorus) Play it alone and you’ll finally give in. But with God on your team you just PTYW. (v.2) When God designed how He meant life to be He planned to team up with you and with me. Sometimes we forget God and put Him on the bench Then we strain and we groan but we never gain an inch. (chorus) (instrumental interlude) (v.3) God has the best vision. He sees it all. And He knows this game and He waits for our call. He can’t be lost through some front office trade And He can’t get hurt so He might as well be played. (chorus)
