They stood firm before the storm of steel,
without tanks, without shelter, without sleep,
with only the name of home on their lips
and the land that needed to be defended.
A force came, heavy and dark,
carried by old hatreds and false rights.
They attacked houses, churches,
attacked peaceful villages,
sowed fear over powerless people.
And they the Croatian warriors
did not defend borders on a map,
but hearths, mothers' tears,
children's drawings in homes without electricity.
History will tell: they were weak in weapons,
but resolute and strong in defending their homeland.
Because whoever defends freedom does not attack
he only repels the enemy's malicious.
And that is why the land remembers their glorious battles,
in mud and snow, in long cold winters.
Freedom is not given, it is defended when it is most difficult.
