Story behind the song
The song was written long ago about a 1970's summer relationship that started with a lot of instant sexual energy, and ended soon after with her and her girlfriend running off to a California hippie compound. A few years later I ran into her sister who said she was back in town and she wanted to give her my phone number, but she never called.
Lyrics
CANADIAN STARLIGHT Walking hand in hand on the road outside of town We left the crowded guestroom as the sun was going down We walked along the lakeshore and you whispered in my ear The message in the twilight was something oh so clear We lay before the water in the stillness of the night Clinging to each other in the fear of morning light We said that love's embracing was a yearning much too strong Why fight that which is right but we knew it wouldn't last long Oh Canadian starlight where are you today? Oh Canadian starlight I knew you'd never stay My dreams of love eternal are sweetened by memories Of young men/girls in their prime of life longing to be free Oh Canadian Starlight
