Story behind the song
My story: You never know when your life will change, or when you will be moved to change it. I've surrendered to the point of expecting it every minute of every day, so I'm not as surprised each time it happens - and it does happen! I had almost forgotten this when I went to check my e-mail today. It was the usual morning routine: get up; switch on the computer; walk to the bathroom and splash my face; start the coffee; read my e-mail... what's this? A message forwarded by my friend Tom, from Kim? Who's that? And why a message from her? Bam! Let the changes begin. First moment, a change in plans; next moment, a change in perspective - an awakening; then, reflection while eyes clear, and then a song and some journaling. Our lives are so rich in opposites: hot and cold; good and bad; North and South; stop and go; "hello" and "goodbye..." our familiarity should make each one's occurrence seem commonplace, right? Not so. When we lose a loved one or experience any untimely loss we feel shock, horror, anger, sorrow and empathy. I wonder: is it because we always expect the distance between those opposites to be greater? While I read about Alison's friend Bridget I reconnected with my own losses; when Kim voiced her renewed and passionate determination, as evidenced by her e-mail initiative, my own determination was re-energized. So I believe this to be one of the reasons these things happen: to open our eyes. We do close them bit by bit with the weight of business-at-hand and day-to-day living, so we need reminders of the more important things from time to time. And life, in its miraculous perfection, is so rich in reminders. But what do you think? What do you believe? It is that very belief which determines what you will do with the new energy created by each change. My life changed again this morning. Thanks to Bridget and her family, and Alison. Thanks to Kim and Tom sharing the experience. We all feel the loss of this sweet girl. Let's continue the beauty of her life and determine today, as Kim did, to bring her spirit into our hearts and make a difference now, in every moment!
Lyrics
Alison's News alison came home from school today with terrible news - a young girl who she played with just fourteen years old - had surrendered her soul to eternity bridget was sweet - she loved to have fun she was in the ninth grade - her life had just begun not a great swimmer - but she wasnÕt one to give up and she'd smile while trying all of my horror and all of my anger tossing me, spinning me Ôround good reasons nowhere to be found if we could love a little more care a little more give someone the benefit of a doubt take the time a little more be kind a little more who knows why these things happen, but to open our eyes my daughter alison came home from school and taught me a lesson of family and fate, and the time that we waste now i'm counting my blessings don't get me wrong, there are times in our lives when our problems are hard to call challenges but in more perspective, and out of respect let's adjust where we put all the emphasis and do better things all our horror and all of our anger tossing us, spinning us Ôround good reasons nowhere to be found if we could love a little more care a little more give someone the benefit of a doubt take the time a little more be kind a little more who knows why these things happen, but to open our eyes but to open our eyes my daughter alison came home from school and taught me a lesson my daughter alison came home from school and taught me a lesson my daughter alison came home from school ...
